Recall of Ford and Lincoln Vehicles Over Faulty Back-Up Cameras
Ford Motor Company has issued a product defect recall for more than 700,000 trucks, SUVs, vans, and cars. This includes popular models of the ubiquitous F-150 pick-up. The recall is due to backup cameras that may occasionally show a distorted image or go blank while the vehicle is in reverse and the camera is in use. This defect could lead to the drivers not being able to see obstacles or persons behind the vehicle, which could result in a crash.
The recall includes the following vehicles:
- Most 2020 models of Ford’s F-Series pick-up (which are the top-selling vehicles in America)
- 2020 Explorer
- 2020 Mustang
- 2020 Transit
- 2020 Escape
- 2020 Expedition
- 2020 Ranger
- 2020 Edge.
- 2020 Lincoln Nautilus
- 2020 Lincoln Corsair
What The Recall Means
Ford issued a written statement explaining that the problem stems from a circuit board malfunction. The faulty circuit board is part of the back-up camera system. Ford says the defective circuit board can cause images to become distorted or not appear on the screen at all when the vehicle is reversing and the camera feature is engaged. The defect results in the vehicles not meeting federal safety standards for visibility.
To address the recall, the entire back-up camera system will be replaced at Ford dealerships at no cost to consumers. Questions from vehicle owners are being taken by Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
If you own one of the above models, check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) within the recall section of their website to see if your vehicle is affected. Just plug in your vehicle’s 17-digit VIN.
Dangers Associated with Defective Back-Up Cameras
KidsandCars.org, a safety advocacy group, notes that at least 50 children are hit by reversing vehicles every week in the United States. Most of those victims are very young children – toddlers between the ages of one and two years of age. More than 60% of back-up accidents involve a large vehicle such as a van, SUV, or truck, due to restricted visibility. Since May 2018, all automobiles sold in American have been required by federal law to include a back-up camera.

What to Do After a Back-Up Accident
If you have been involved in a backover accident that occurred as the result of a faulty back-up camera, the automobile manufacturer may be responsible for any injuries the accident caused. It is important to seek qualified legal representation in such a case, as automakers have deep pockets and defend such cases vigorously. A skilled attorney will know how to proceed and protect your rights. You may be entitled to monetary compensation for your medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.
