Sacramento Woman Identified as Interstate Accident Fatality

A woman who was killed in an interstate accident involving three vehicles near Natomas on September 5 has been identified. A Sacramento resident, identified as Linda Marie Hufnagel, age 53, was in a Mazda around 3:00 a.m. heading south on Interstate 5 near the transition with I-80. She swerved for unknown reasons and collided with a U-Haul on the right shoulder with mechanical problems.

Other Drivers Injured in Interstate Accidents

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Hufnagel then pulled back onto the road, her car stopped working, and a Toyota Tacoma crashed into it. Hufnagel died as a result. The U-Haul driver suffered injuries in the crash and minor trauma to the pickup driver. Both were taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Investigation Ongoing in Fatal Collision

It has not been determined whether drugs or alcohol factored in the collision. Authorities shut down the lanes for a time as an investigation was conducted by CHP traffic accident detectives.

Collision Negligence in an Interstate Accident

A claim for damages can only be brought if negligence is established in an accident that results in injury or death. Your injury attorney can conduct his or her own investigation to gather the evidence that supports your claim to recover damages. Investigators review police reports, interview witnesses, search for surveillance footage, and use other techniques during an investigation. An experienced injury lawyer uses the gathered evidence to build a persuasive case to present to the at-fault party’s insurance company or take to court. There are two types of claims: personal injury for those who suffered trauma in a collision and wrongful death for families who lost a loved one.

Recoverable Compensation for Personal Injuries

The following compensation is usually available to injured parties by filing a personal injury claim:

  • Costs associated with medical care following an interstate accident. Bills from hospitals and physicians, tests, treatments, and rehabilitation are included in this category. The future costs of the injury are considered if it is not resolved by the time of settlement.
  • Injured parties lost wages due to being unable to work are recoverable.
  • Due to the accident, physical and mental pain and suffering results, which can be compensated.

Getting Compensation for a Wrongful Death

A family that files a claim for wrongful death after their loved one died in an interstate accident caused by someone else’s negligence may recover the following:

  • Cost of the funeral and burial
  • Wages until the retirement age of the decedent
  • Compensation can be provided for the losses suffered by a spouse and children
  • Assistance with household tasks
  • Inheritance losses
