Local Nonprofit Promotes Safety as Chico Cyclists Increase
As more and more Chico cyclists take to the streets, a local cyclist organization has called for increased safety for bike riders in the city. Chico Velo, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting safety within the local cycling community, reported on Monday, June 8, 2020, that they have noticed a relative increase in people using bicycles on Chico roads during the COVID-19 pandemic. While families and individuals are looking for ways to keep active while sheltering-in-place, Chico Velo released several recommendations for staying safe.
Knowing the Rules of the Road
John Pearson, the executive director of Chico Velo, told reporters that bicycle safety is “a two-way street” for both motorists and cyclists, adding that all roadway users should know the regulations for bicycles on public roads. Pearson stressed that drivers should “know what the rules are for cyclists” and that bicyclists, likewise, should “know what a car’s rights are” and that spreading this knowledge on both sides of the situation would increase safety all around.

Safety Tips for Cyclists
Pearson provided a list of safety tips for cyclists who want to take precautions against being injured in an accident. The list includes making sure to wear a properly fitting helmet, attaching lights to both the front and rear of your bicycle, and always riding in the same direction as traffic.
Pearson also added that many people are dusting off old bikes to start riding again and that those doing so should always make sure their bicycle is in good condition. With old bicycles, it’s important to make sure the tires are inflated, that the chain is oiled, and that there are no serious issues with rust. Pearson said that, while bike maintenance may seem simple, “it will make a big difference.”
Riding Defensively
When riding a bicycle, it’s important to make sure you are practicing defensive riding techniques. Cyclists should always make sure that there is at least three feet of space between their bike and any motor vehicle. Cyclists should also remember that they are relatively difficult to see and do what they can to make sure drivers know where they are.
Cyclist Injuries
Cyclists injured in accidents involving motor vehicles often suffer major trauma. Cyclist injuries frequently have a major impact on peoples’ lives. Recovering after a bicycle accident can take a long time and is often both mentally stressful and physically painful. Furthermore, these injuries can mean running up a number of medical bills and may also cause a loss of income.
To ensure that you have the money you need to pay for medical care and move forward with your life after an accident, it’s important to speak with a Chico personal injury lawyer with ample experience working on serious injury cases.
