Major Construction Project to Begin on Chico Roadway
City officials reported that a large-scale construction project would begin on a major Chico roadway on Sunday, July 18, 2020. The project will involve repaving a large portion of The Esplanade, one of the main thoroughfares of the city, and is expected to reduce wear on vehicles as well as improve the safety of local drivers.
The Project
Knife River Construction, a contractor with Chico City, stated that the project would be completed over the course of five days and that crews would be working mainly at night, with traffic controls implemented between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Night work would reportedly include:
- Two pavements lifts from 11th Avenue to the south end of East Avenue
- Grinding from 11th Avenue to East Avenue
- A second and final pavement lift from East Avenue to Eaton Road
Traffic controls would reportedly include four-lane stretches of Esplanade reduced to two lanes. Officials indicated that local access in the area of construction would be subject to detours, closures, and temporary delays as is necessary to accommodate construction. Drivers have been asked to allow ample time or plan alternative routes in order to keep workers safe.
Funding
Chico officials stated in a press release that this project is an essential service that is meant to provide effective and safe transportation conditions for area residents. The project is being funded through money from the California Senate Bill 1 gasoline tax as well as franchise fees for waste hauling companies.
The Importance of Safe Roads
Pavement issues may not seem like a huge problem, but potholes and other roadway defects frequently cause serious accidents. Even a relatively small pavement defect can cause a driver to hesitate or make an unsafe avoidance maneuver, which may lead to a collision that causes major injuries.
