Jaguar Strikes SUV Causing It to Go Down Embankment and Overturn

A major injury occurred to a motorist on July 24 when their vehicle was struck in Sacramento and went off the road. The accident happened around 6:14 p.m. along the eastbound Pocket Road entrance ramp at northbound Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said an SUV was struck by a Jaguar, went down an embankment and overturned on the right-hand side.

Man in Overturned Vehicle Suffers Major Injury

Passersby were trying to get the occupants out of the vehicle. First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department were called to the scene, where they discovered the male in the vehicle had suffered a major injury. He was transported by the responders to a nearby hospital. The major injury collision is under investigation by the CHP to find out how it occurred.

Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents represent one of the most violent types of collisions. The complex nature of rollovers involves not just the vehicle type but also factors in the road, environmental elements, and driver error. Let’s look at the different factors that can result in a rollover crash:

  • Type of vehicle: It is well-known that tall, narrow vehicles with a high center of gravity experience the highest number of rollovers. This includes vans, pickups, and SUVs.
  • Drunk driving: Fifty percent of all rollover crashes with a fatality involve a drunk driver. Inebriated drivers lose muscle coordination and judgment and have faulty decision-making processes, resulting in loss of control.
  • Speeding: Driving at a speed above the suggested limit results in more rollovers than any other type of accident. Four out of 10 rollovers involving a fatality are due to speeding. Highways where the speed limit is 55 mph or more account for roughly 75 percent of all fatal rollovers.
  • Driver error: Studies show that nine out of 10 rollovers occur when the driver is either going straight or rounding a curve. This puts the onus on driver error as the cause of rollovers. Some of the behaviors leading to a rollover include drunk or distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of drugs.
  • Driving on a rural road: Rural roads with a speed limit of 55 and which lack a center divider or guardrails account for 75 percent of all fatal rollovers.
  • Single-vehicle accidents: About 85 percent of all rollovers with a fatality are those where only one vehicle is involved. This backs up the involvement of poor driver behavior as a significant reason for rollovers.
  • Driving recklessly: Speeding through a turn can cause the tires to lose contact with the road surface and lead to a rollover. Overloaded vehicles are more likely to do this.
  • Multiple-vehicle crashes: While the majority of rollovers are single-vehicle crashes, some do involve other vehicles. In these instances, one vehicle often hits another broadside and causes the first car to flip over.

Roof Crush Can Cause a Major Injury

One of the biggest hazards seen in a rollover accident is when the roof cannot support the weight of the vehicle, causing a crushed roof. This can cause the occupants to be trapped between the ground and the vehicle. Traumatic brain injury, spinal cord damage, and fatal injuries often result.

Investigating a Rollover Accident

Preserving evidence is a crucial act that leads to a successful lawsuit in a rollover accident. That is why we urge our clients to preserve their vehicle, pending our examination. We send our investigators to the scene and have them look for roof crush causes such as weak infrastructure. Our investigators also talk to witnesses and obtain videos from cell phones and traffic surveillance cameras. After reviewing police reports for mistakes and using accident reconstruction techniques to determine liability, we turn the data over to our lawyers. It is used to build a robust case for our clients.
