Double Rollover Accident Occurs on Southbound Hazel Avenue Near Orangevale

A major injury was reported in a two-vehicle rollover accident near Orangevale on September 20. The collision involved a Toyota Highlander SUV and an Audi. It occurred along southbound Hazel Avenue at the American River Bridge around 7:30 in the evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). All the southbound lanes on Hazel Avenue were blocked by the rollover accident.

When police arrived at the scene, they called for first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department when one party was discovered unconscious. Although that individual woke up and was alert, it was determined that they had suffered a major injury and the patient was transported to a hospital in Folsom for evaluation and treatment. Tow trucks were required to right the vehicle.

Dangers of a Rollover Accident

Rollovers are among the most dangerous types of collisions. There are several reasons why this is true. First of all, the airbags protect the passengers inside a vehicle only until they deflate. After that, because the vehicle is experiencing a rollover, the individuals inside may be tossed around, leading to serious injuries. Second, ejection from the vehicle often happens in a rollover, especially if the passengers inside are not using their seat belts.

Third, if the roof of the vehicle becomes crushed in a rollover, it can result in severe head injuries and spinal cord damage. When an injury occurs due to a rollover, it is important to retain the vehicle so it can be checked by investigators to see exactly what caused the trauma.

Causes of a Rollover

Some vehicles such as SUVs, vans and light trucks are more apt to experience a rollover than others. A rollover usually occurs when a vehicle strikes against an object such as a guardrail or ends up in soft dirt on the shoulder, which unbalances the car. Traffic accidents can also cause a rollover.

Crushed Roofs in Rollovers

Rollovers that result in a crushed roof cause catastrophic injuries, ejection from the vehicle and a high number of fatalities. Each year, around 250,000 people die due to rollovers. Vehicle standards require that a roof support three times the weight of a car that weighs less than 6,000 pounds and 1.5 times for a truck. Without a properly supported roof, the risk is increased. When injuries or fatalities occur due to crushed roof, it may be possible to place a claim against the auto manufacturer and others for product liability.

Investigating a Rollover Accident

In addition to checking for auto defects and roof weakness in a rollover accident, our investigators do a lot more. They review the police report for mistakes and interview the witnesses to the accident. They also perform accident reconstruction, which plots out how the crash occurred and damage to the vehicles and roadway.

After photographing the entire rollover accident scene, they look for nearby surveillance cameras that could have captured the incident on video. Roadway maintenance issues are not overlooked either. Weakened guardrails, potholes, overhanging limbs and malfunctioning lights can contribute to a collision.

Once all the evidence has been compiled, it is given over to our lawyers. They use all this information to construct a case that upholds our client’s claim for compensation.
