SR 160 Major Motorcycle Accident Occurs Near SR 12

A major motorcycle accident happened in Sacramento County on September 4 when the rider ran into the back of a Dodge Dart and then exited the road. An air ambulance was called to take the motorcycle rider to a hospital for additional treatment and evaluation of a major injury. According to the incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred in Isleton along northbound State Route 160 just north of State Route 12 near the Rio Vista Bridge at around 12:30 in the afternoon.

Additional Details of the Major Motorcycle Accident

A tow truck was called to the scene to recover the rider’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which had gone down an embankment. The tow company was advised it would need at least 50 feet of cable to retrieve the bike. The CHP is conducting an investigation to determine exactly how the major motorcycle accident occurred.

Major Motorcycle Accident Injury in a Rear-End Collision

Any time a motorcyclist is involved in a rear-end collision, it can result in severe injuries. These rear-enders can occur when the vehicles are traveling at high or low speeds and in any location. Although those inside the passenger vehicle are protected by the steel that surrounds them and multiple safety devices, the motorcycle rider is not and is often ejected from their bike. Ejection from a motorcycle means serious injuries in many cases.

When a Passenger Vehicle Hits a Motorcycle From the Rear

In an accident where a motorcyclist is struck from behind by a passenger vehicle, the rider is often ejected and thrown forward onto the ground. Broken bones and serious damage to the face such as to the teeth, jaw or head can occur, even if the rider is wearing a protective helmet. Broken bones occur when the motorcyclist puts out their arms to try and break their fall.

When a Motorcycle Hits a Passenger Vehicle From the Rear

When a motorcycle crashes into the back of a passenger or other vehicle, it often results in the rider being ejected onto the vehicle it struck. Some riders bounce off and end up on the ground. Either of these scenarios can cause multiple injuries, including to the back, spinal cord, neck, and head.

Ways That Motorcycle Riders Can Stay Safe

Some accidents are unavoidable, however, riders can take certain precautions that can help them avoid a motorcycle accident injury. These include:

  • Make sure the motorcycle you are riding is appropriate for you. Supersports bikes are much faster and require agility and extreme caution to avoid losing control.
  • Stay alert to what’s going on around you. Half of all motorcyclist fatalities occur at intersections.
  • Never ride a motorcycle when you’ve been drinking. Alcohol affects your reflexes, judgment, and ability to understand the distance between your bike and another vehicle.
  • Keep an eye out for road hazards. Bikers know that potholes, oil slicks on the road, debris, and other hazards can cause a motorcycle accident.
  • Always wear a helmet and consider getting protective clothing. Boots are a good idea too because they will help protect your feet in a crash.
  • Don’t ride in inclement weather if possible because it increases the risk of a crash.
  • When going out at night, use reflective tape on the bike or your clothing to make yourself more visible. Wearing light-colored clothing can help too.
