Man Killed Near Highway 50 – A man in his 60s lost his life when he was struck and killed by a semi-truck near the Highway 50 on-ramp in West Sacramento on Thursday, October 4, 2018. Authorities said they believe he was in the roadway when he was hit. The California Highway Patrol is investigating to determine the cause of the collision.

Accident Details
According to the CHP’s incident logs, the accident happened at about 5:20 a.m. on the Harbor Boulevard on-ramp on eastbound Highway 50. Police said the man was struck at Harbor Boulevard and West Capitol Avenue, but it wasn’t until the on-ramp to Highway 50 that the truck driver noticed he had hit a pedestrian. West Sacramento police were called to the scene and closed both eastbound Highway 50 on-ramp and off-ramp at Harbor Boulevard for several hours while they investigated the crash. By 7:30 a.m., police were still at the scene investigating, and the semi-truck was pulled over at the on-ramp. However, no other non-emergency vehicles were at the scene.
Deadly Pedestrian Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in 2011, 4,432 pedestrians were killed and 69,000 were injured in the United States. The NHTSA stated that on average, a pedestrian is killed every two hours and sustained injuries every eight minutes. This data does not include pedestrian accidents that required emergency room treatment because they did not happen in public roadways.

When a pedestrian accident occurs, it could be the fault of the motorist, and sometimes it could be the fault of the pedestrian. Both parties have a duty of care to each other. By understanding the common causes of most pedestrian accidents, both motorists and pedestrians can work together to prevent these severe and sometimes fatal accidents from occurring in the first place.

Drivers must always apply reasonable care while on the roadways. If they disregard their duties and cause an accident, it is known as negligence. Common factors that play a role in driver negligence include:

Pedestrian’s Duty:
Pedestrians must also use reasonable care for their own safety. If a pedestrian is not exercising care and gets hit by a driver, he or she may have contributed to the cause of the accident. Some of the biggest reasons include:

- Darting in front of a car
- Failing to use crosswalks
- Ignoring traffic signals
- Using cell phones or music devices
- Wearing dark clothing
