Mercedes-Benz Recalls Over 300,000 Vehicles Due to Engine Stalling Risk
What is the Issue?
The problem stems from a design defect that can cause water to build up in the spare tire wheel, possibly leading to a fuel pump malfunction and causing the engine to shut down. According to the recall notice filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fuel provided to the engine could be disrupted, leading to a propulsion loss without warning. In such instances, the risk of an accident could increase.
How to Spot the Problem
Drivers may first be aware of the issue by the check engine light signal, the sound of water splashing around in the spare tire wheel, or a wet carpet in the vehicle’s trunk.
According to the notice, the German luxury vehicle manufacturer has been aware of over 700 warranty claims and field and service reports related to this issue since March 2019. Mercedes-Benz auto dealerships have already been notified of the recall, and vehicle owners will be notified by February 21, 2023.
Although the notice stated that the water-intrusion defect has yet to occur, Mercedes-Benz is issuing a voluntary recall as a precautionary measure. Owners can take their cars to their local dealerships for an inspection.
How Will Mercedes-Bendz Dealerships Fix the Issue?
To fix the issue, Mercedes-Benz technicians will look for signs of water damage, put a water drain plug in the well of the spare tire, and install a new fuel pump control free of charge. The dealerships will also refund vehicle owners for previous work performed before the recall.
Mercedes-Benz said it is unaware of any crashes, injuries, deaths, or property damage claims related to the engine stalling risk in the United States.

How to Check for a Recall
You can check the NHTSA’s website to determine whether your vehicle has an open recall. Enter your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). If a recall does not appear, your car has no open recalls. Due to automakers constantly issuing recalls, vehicle owners are encouraged to check regularly.

Earlier Mercedes-Benz Recall Over Sunroof Problems
Mercedes-Benz has recently recalled over 124,000 vehicles due to issues with the sunroofs. The German automaker said the bonding between the sliding roof frame and the glass sunroof panel may not meet specifications in certain C-Class, CLS, CLK, and E-Class vehicle models from the years 2001 to 2011. The glass sunroof panel may not be adequately secured, which could detach and increase the risk of an accident.
