Losing a Loved One in a Tragic Accident
Receiving news that your loved one was killed in a tragic accident causes unimaginable shock and grief for family members. Initially, family members may not believe that their loved one died and become convinced it is a mistake. Although the grief people feel is universal, individual responses vary. A common need all people who have lost someone share is the love and support of family and close friends. The following are several ways to help:
- Be available to the bereaved person giving them a chance to voice the loss they feel. Don’t interrupt and give them the chance to speak unabated.
- Ask if there is anything you can do to help. This includes grocery shopping, preparing easily warmed up meals, or picking up medical prescriptions at the pharmacy. Sometimes, the bereaved person, who is overwhelmed by the loss, may not accept. In such cases, it might be better to ask for a grocery list. Be specific.
- One of the hardest tasks the bereaved person faces is visiting the funeral parlor to make final arrangements. Offer to accompany them.
A Wrongful Death Lawsuit
No amount of financial compensation will replace the deceased. Yet, many families find it difficult to pay for funeral expenses and continue to handle ordinary household debt. A wrongful death claim can address this problem by allowing family members to recover such expenses. It also allows the family members to right a wrong when a negligent party causes the death of their loved one. Some of the expenses a wrongful death lawsuit covers are:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Suffering the deceased experienced prior to death (addressed in a survival action)
- Loss of love by a spouse
- Loss of retirement benefit
- Loss of wages now and in the future
