Motorcycle Caliper Injury

Motorcycle Caliper Injury – Motorcycle accidents have the potential to lead to serious injuries. In some cases, these accidents could be fatal. Because of this, it is essential for everyone to stay up to date on the latest information surrounding motorcycle accidents and their associated injuries. Some of the statistics that were published by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) just a few short years ago include:

  • In 2013, there was almost 4,700 people who were killed in motorcycle accidents.
  • This does not include the close to 90,000 individuals who sustained serious injuries.
  • Per mile traveled, motorcyclists were more than 25 times more likely to be involved in a serious accident.
  • About a quarter of individuals involved in a motorcycle accident did not have a valid license to ride one.

Because the rider is exposed to the open environment, they are more likely to sustain devastating injuries. In some cases, these injuries could involve the spinal cord.

A Case Report

A group of medical professionals put together a case report describing a severe accident that led to a complicated injury. A young man was riding his motorcycle down the road. The conditions changed and he had to react quickly. This resulted in him laying down his bike at high speed. When this happened, his bike disintegrated, and the parts flew all over the road. One of the calipers from the motorcycle became lodged in his back. When EMS arrived on the scene, he was complaining of numbness and tingling that was traveling down his back and into his legs. They realized that the caliper could have damaged his spinal cord. They rushed him to a nearby hospital where an MRI scan was performed which confirmed the injury.

Treatment of a Serious Spinal Cord Injury

When someone suffers an injury of the spinal cord, this is an emergency. Nerve cells, unlike other body parts, are unlikely to regenerate following a serious injury. Because of this, spinal cord injuries often lead to permanent complications. Some of the symptoms of spinal cord injuries include:

  • Severe pain in the back
  • Numbness and tingling in one or more extremities
  • Shooting pains that travel down the extremities
  • Possible loss of motor function

In some cases, surgery can correct the injury. If something is lodged in the back compressing a nerve (but not tearing it), its function could be restored when the object is removed. Combined with physical therapy, this could help someone regain function. Anyone with questions or concerns should reach out to a personal injury lawyer in Sacramento. You and your family may be entitled to financial compensation.
