Motorcyclist Suffered Major Injuries in Crash
A biker from Citrus Heights suffered serious accident injuries in a motorcycle crash on June 6 along U.S. Route 101. The accident happened shortly before 2:00 in the afternoon when the rider, identified as Edward Andrews, was going around a curve to the left, north of Cummings Road near Garberville. I would like to take this opportunity to send my condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Andrews.
Details of the Accident
For unknown reasons, his 2008 Harley Screamin Eagle went off the edge of the road where it proceeded down an embankment and overturned. The rider was ejected from his motorcycle, suffering major injuries in the crash. He was flown by Reach Air Ambulance to Redding Mercy Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Traffic in lane number three was shut down for about 20 minutes in order to evacuate the injured man. Traffic control in the area was assisted by members of the Laytonville Fire Department, Cal-Fire, Caltrans and others.
I would like to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Edward Andrews in this their time of grief.
Motorcycle Crash Causes
Even experienced motorcycle riders can find themselves involved in an accident. While most are at low speeds and cause no injuries, going off the road or being hit by a turning vehicle are the most common accidents. Some of the reasons accidents happen on curves are:
- Going too fast around a curve
- Not knowing how to trail brake
- Lack of proper maintenance on the bike
- Not having anti-lock brakes
- Riding a motorcycle that is too difficult to handle
- Not taking weather conditions into account
- Signage is not available to alert bikers they are approaching a curve
- Roads are not maintained, causing a biker to lose control
Motorcycle Accidents Caused by Negligence
Motorcycle riders know that they are vulnerable to injury when compared with motor vehicles. Most riders do their best to stay safe. However, negligent drivers cause many motorcycle crashes each year. The most common causes are:
- A driver makes a turn into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
- A motorist runs a red light at an intersection, causing a motorcycle crash.
- A driver is distracted by talking on their cell phone or texting and does not see the motorcycle rider.
- The driver is drunk or has been using drugs and is driving dangerously around a motorcycle rider.
Compensation Following a Motorcycle Accident
Motorcycle riders have the same rights as others on the roadway. If a motorcyclist is injured in an accident caused by another’s negligence, they have the right to fair compensation for their injuries. A lawyer who is experienced in handling motorcycle crashes can be of invaluable assistance. An attorney who negotiates with an insurance company can get you a higher settlement. If that is unsuccessful, the lawyer can prepare a case to take to civil court. This involves using available evidence and conducting their own investigation with accident reconstruction. Personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, which means they don’t get paid until the case reaches a successful conclusion.
