Causes of a Major Injury Accident on a Rural Highway
When traveling on a rural highway, the increased speed can cause a major collision if two vehicles collide. Negligence on the part of a driver or other entity is a common cause such as:
- Lack of clear visibility: In addition to weather conditions, poor lighting and vegetation can obstruct the view. Because motorcycles are smaller and more easily obscured than other vehicles, they are particularly vulnerable to poor visibility.
- Blind spots: Blind spots occur when a driver cannot see other vehicles on the road due to obstructions or the construction of their car. Motorcyclists are more likely to disappear into another driver’s blind spot because of their smaller size.
- Speeding: Drivers often speed on rural highways because there are fewer cars and police patrolling the roads. Speeding can lead to decreased reaction time, making it difficult for drivers to avoid causing a major injury accident involving a motorcycle.
- Distracted driving: Drivers are increasingly distracted by their cell phones, navigation systems and other distractions while driving on rural highways. Looking away from the roadway for a few seconds can lead to a crash.
- Unsafe passing: Drivers can be impatient when they are stuck behind a slower vehicle and risk passing where it is dangerous. A serious crash can result from this reckless behavior.
- Poor road conditions: Rural highways are sometimes poorly maintained and can feature loose gravel, soft shoulders, potholes and sharp turns that make it hard for drivers and motorcycle riders. Poor road conditions can also increase the chances of a motorist losing control and colliding with a motorcycle, causing a major injury accident.
