A motorcyclist fatality was reported in Auburn on April 3 when a vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the rider in a head-on crash. Officers found the driver of a Hyundai Sonata who caused the collision waiting at the accident scene. He was identified as a Sacramento resident.
Head-On Crash Costs Life of Motorcycle Rider
The motorcyclist who died at the scene was riding a Harley Davidson east on Foresthill Road when the Sonata, traveling west, crossed over the double-yellow line into the opposing traffic and caused the head-on crash with the motorcycle. The motorcyclist’s name has not yet been released pending notification of the family by the County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the vehicle suffered only minor injuries and was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for further evaluation. The CHP reported that neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be contributing factors in the accident.

Compensation in a Wrongful Death Head-On Crash
If a motorcyclist is killed by a negligent driver, the immediate family members can sue for wrongful death. Spouses, children and stepchildren who depended on at least half of their income from the deceased may sue. A variety of compensation options are available for wrongful death cases in California:
- In addition to the decedent’s wages, any other benefits from their employment, including pensions, insurance and others are recoverable up to the age of their retirement.
- You can recover the costs associated with the burial and funeral.
- The surviving spouse may recover compensation for the loss of consortium provided by the decedent.
- Loss of inheritance is available to claim in some cases.
- Children of the decedent, whether natural or adopted, may be able to recover damages for the guidance and nurturing they would have received from the decedent had he or she lived.
- Stepchildren may be entitled to damages if half their financial support came from the decedent.
- Household services provided by the deceased such as lawn care, childcare, and tax preparation may be claimed.
- A survival action may be filed if the decedent didn’t die immediately or if he or she was hospitalized before their death.
- If a loved one died due to egregious behavior or an intentional act, his or her family may be entitled to seek punitive damages. Your injury lawyer can advise you on whether your family can ask for punitive damages since they are only allowed in certain cases.
