Accident on Winding Way Bridge Injures Motorcycle Rider
A major injury occurred to a motorcyclist on November 5 in Sacramento after the rider collided with a vehicle. The accident happened around 1:34 p.m along Winding Way on the bridge just east of College Oak Drive. Traffic was halted in both directions on College Oak, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), while the motorcyclist was transported to a hospital and the scene cleared. Both vehicles were towed from the accident site, and an investigation was conducted into the cause of the major injury accident by authorities.
Reasons Why Motorists Cause a Major Injury to a Motorcycle Rider
Motorists keep an eye out for other drivers, but in many cases, they aren’t watching carefully for motorcycle or bicycle riders or pedestrians. This may account for the high number of injury collisions. The majority of these accidents happen because:
- The motorist is making a left turn from the center of the block across traffic and doesn’t look for a motorcyclist coming toward them or thinks they can cross before the rider reaches them. In these cases, the motorist doesn’t realize that it is difficult to judge the distance and speed of a motorcycle rider who is coming toward them.
- The driver runs a red light and strikes a motorcycle rider going legally through an intersection, causing a major injury.
- A motorist stops suddenly in front of a motorcycle rider, who then strikes the back of the vehicle and is ejected. This type of accident cannot only cause a major injury but more serious trauma.
- A drunk driver is sharing the roadway with a motorcyclist. Because the drunk driver speeds up and slows down and weaves in and out of the lane, it can easily cause a major injury.
- Improper backing: A motorist who backs up without checking their rearview mirror can cause a major injury.
- Dooring: Dooring accidents happen that involve other vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. They occur when either the driver or a passenger opens their car door without looking to ensure the way is clear.
Types of Injuries in a Motorcycle Accident
Motorcycle riders are subject to serious injuries due to their lack of protection in a collision. Some of the types of injuries that occur include:
- Traumatic brain injuries: Although most motorcycle riders use a helmet to protect themselves from a TBI, which can be devastating and life-altering in some cases, trauma can still occur. These types of injuries often happen when the rider is ejected from their bike.
- Facial trauma: Facial trauma can range from bone fractures and contact with the motorcycle’s chin bar to broken teeth, eye damage, and others. Injuries to the face can result in scarring and disfigurement, which usually isn’t covered by insurance. By filing a claim against the at-fault driver, the motorcyclist can recover damages for this major injury to cover surgical repairs.
- Road rash: Road rash can range from mild to severe, causing debridement of the skin and embedded roadway materials, resulting in infection. Serious debridement issues may require skin grafts to repair.
- Broken bones: Violent impact in a motorcycle accident can cause fractures of the legs, hands, arms, pelvis, shoulder, or spine, all of which can require extensive medical care.
