I-5 Near Twin Cities Road Blocked by Multiple Semi Collision
A multiple semi collision southwest of Elk Grove along Interstate 5 on October 20 resulted in a large fire, stalling traffic and requiring that a Sig Alert be issued. The accident occurred around 7:08 a.m. along northbound I-5 just south of the Twin Cities Road off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report. The semi that caught fire was on the bridge over the canal, which also set nearby trees ablaze.
Fuel Leak Reported in Multiple Semi Collision
Three semis were involved in the accident. One was on the bridge, and another was reported off the roadway underneath. Hazmat teams were called to the scene for a report of fuel leaking from the tank and engine of the big rig on fire that was going into the waterway.
No Injuries Reported in Massive Accident
There was no indication on what type of cargo the big rig was hauling. Authorities closed the road south of exit 498, and traffic was heavily backed up. No injuries were reported.
Clean Up Expected to Take Hours After Multiple Semi Collision
The roadway was reportedly expected to be closed down until at least 2:30 p.m. while the area was cleared and an investigation into the cause of the big rig collision was conducted. However, it was closed down again due to dust from the absorbent that was spread.
Dangers of a Semi Collision
Accidents involving semis can be extremely dangerous due to the size and weight of the vehicles. In this recent accident, three semis crashed and one caught fire. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the accident, and no smaller vehicles were involved. However, this highlights the dangers that can occur when semis are involved in accidents.
