Four People Transported to Hospital Following Multiple-Vehicle Pileup
The Fire Department transported the four patients to hospitals in the area with injuries reported as minor. The highway was reopened about an hour after the multiple-vehicle collision occurred. Investigators with the CHP are working toward determining how the accident happened.
Causes of a Multiple-Vehicle Pileup
Accidents that involve multiple vehicles can be terrifying to those in the middle of it and often result in serious injuries or even fatalities. Rather than being a rare occurrence, a multiple-vehicle pileup is more common than most people think. All it takes to cause one is a negligent driver or the right conditions. Some of the most common causes of a pileup are:
- Speeding is a major contributor to a multiple-vehicle pileup. Not only can the driver lose control and crash into another vehicle, but they cannot stop in time to avoid striking the car ahead if it slows down suddenly.
- Distracted driving can easily lead to a multiple-vehicle pileup, even though texting or changing a radio station only takes seconds. In that amount of time, the vehicle can travel the length of a football field.
- Drunk or drugged driving impairs the motorist’s ability to judge distances, slows reflexes, and affects their judgment. Drunk and drugged drivers cause many accidents each year of all types.
- Adverse weather conditions can lead to a multiple-vehicle pileup. Whether the pavement is wet with rain, icy, or snow is coming down, it affects the performance of the vehicle. In really bad conditions, a motorist can be cited for reckless driving even if they are under the speed limit if the conditions warrant it.
- Tailgating is the cause of many accidents that end up involving multiple vehicles.
- Fatigued driving affects a motorist the same way being intoxicated does and can lead to a pileup. When overly tired, pull over and rest, walk around the car to wake up, or call a rideshare such as Uber.
- Construction zones are places where a multiple-vehicle pileup can occur when signage is confusing, lanes are too narrow, or a work truck suddenly pulls out.
- Poor roadway maintenance can lead to a collision involving multiple vehicles. When a car strikes a pothole, it can cause the driver to lose control, leave their lane and strike another vehicle. Debris in the roadway, poor lighting, and other maintenance problems can also cause a collision. The government entity in charge of maintenance may be liable for accident injuries or fatalities. However, since the timeline for filing against a government entity is much shorter than for other personal injuries, being assisted by a lawyer may be helpful to avoid missing the deadline.
