Napa County Officials Identify Woman Fatally Injured During Crash

On Tuesday, August 11, 2020, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office reported the identity of a woman who tragically lost her life during a local vehicle accident. The decedent was identified as a 22-year-old resident of Vacaville, although initial reports identified her as a Vallejo resident. She reportedly suffered head injuries during a collision involving a fire truck that took place on June 30, 2020, and passed away a week later. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

Accident Information

The accident happened at around noon on Highway 221 at the intersection of Streblow Drive near Napa Valley College. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the decedent had been driving a Toyota Camry northbound on Highway 221 and was attempting to perform a left turn in order to enter Streblow. At this time, her vehicle was struck by a Cal Fire engine on its way from Napa to a fire reported in Contra Costa County. According to CHP, the fire engine had been traveling with its siren and lights activated.

Response

Emergency responders at the scene of the accident discovered that the Camry driver was severely injured and had her rushed to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center via ambulance for immediate treatment. After being stabilized, the woman was transferred to a hospital in Solano County. Tragically, hospital officials reported that the woman passed away from “acute head trauma” on Sunday, July 5, 2020.

Investigation

Directly after the incident, police shut down the highway at the location of the collision, eventually extending the closure to Imola Avenue. The road remained closed during investigations that lasted until around 5:15 p.m. As CHP investigators continue to look into the accident, no likely causes have been mentioned in reports.

Investigating a fatal accident like this one is a difficult task for police. Because they are not able to ask the decedent about the accident, police may not uncover critical evidence. Often, this means negligent parties cannot be held responsible, and families are unable to recover compensation. To make sure all at-fault parties are held liable, it is very important to reach out to a Napa personal injury lawyer with experience privately investigating wrongful death cases.

Collisions Involving Government Vehicles

Wrongful death claims can be complex and cases that involve government vehicles are even more difficult to handle. Crucially, a wrongful death claim that involves a government vehicle needs to be filed within a dramatically shorter time-frame. Families typically need to file their case within 180 days (or six months) of the date of the collision. While this law is meant to help governments quickly fix issues with their vehicles, it puts families at a disadvantage. For this reason, it’s critical to get in touch with a trusted Napa wrongful death lawyer as soon as you are able.
