Tractor-Trailer and Sedan Collide on I-80 Near Truxel Road
A tractor-trailer rear-end crash with a sedan occurred in Natomas on June 13 that resulted in minor injuries. The accident happened along eastbound I-80 just east of the Truxel Road off-ramp around 3:39 a.m. between a big rig hauling a 50-foot trailer and a Toyota Camry Solara. When the accident occurred, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the tractor-trailer went down into a ditch and the trailer ended up on its left side.
Minor Injuries Reported in Rear-End Crash
Major front-end damage was found on the front of the tractor, and there were fears it might catch fire because the battery was sparking. The Toyota sustained moderate rear-end damage. The number five lane on I-80 was closed down while investigators with the CHP worked toward determining the cause of the crash.
Truck Driver Negligence as a Cause of a Rear-End Crash
Most of the merchandise and produce delivered around California is done by truck drivers in those big rigs you see going down the highways. However, the urgency to deliver goods to market and pressure from the trucking companies can end up with unqualified drivers being hired and risks being taken to get the job done. In many cases, a rear-end collision involving a big rig ends up causing an override accident, which can result in serious injuries and fatalities to those in smaller vehicles.
Some of the accidents caused by a negligence that can lead to a rear-end crash occur because of the following:
- A rear-end crash can be caused by a speeding truck driver. Due to the much heavier weight of a big rig, it takes longer for the driver to stop if an emergency occurs, which can lead to an accident.
- Bad brakes can prevent the trucker from stopping in time to avoid an accident. Brake problems in big rigs contribute to about 40 percent of all accidents involving semis. It is also the reason runaway truck ramps are built since brake failure prevents the driver from slowing or stopping.
- Tailgating by a trucker can cause a rear-end crash if the vehicle in front suddenly slows.
- Fatigued driving can end up causing a big rig to slam into the rear of another vehicle. Truck drivers are limited in the number of hours they can be on the road and must take required rest breaks because of federal regulations. However, in order to meet their deadlines, they may cheat and end up nodding off behind the wheel or lose their concentration, which can lead to a rear-end crash.
- Poor roadway maintenance by the government entity in charge can cause a dangerous accident between a big rig and smaller vehicle. If lack of maintenance is found to have caused the accident, the injured party may place a claim against that government entity. Because the deadline for filing a claim against a government entity is six months, having an injury lawyer handle it and arbitrate your case can be a good idea.
