Roseville PD Uses Technology for Virus Protection

The Roseville Police Department is utilizing new resources, in the form of modern technology, to protect officers from catching a virus while on the job. Given the current state of the country, it is more important than ever to maintain high standards of hygiene to ensure the safety of yourself and others. With help from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Roseville PD now uses two innovative methods to increase the safety of their health while in patrol cars.

These new procedures for higher efficiency sanitation began when the National Center for Biotechnology Information did swab tests on the interiors of 18 patrol cars. The results were shocking – there were four times more bacteria present on steering wheels than on a public toilet seat. While it may seem unbelievable to think that a public toilet seat could be cleaner than a steering wheel, take a second to think about your experience as a driver. Many people eat and drink inside their vehicle. Many of us also spend hours in our car most days of the week. The question is, how often are these vehicles being sanitized?

Two Pieces of New Technology

Rob Baquera, Roseville Police Department spokesman, stated that the department now has access to two cool, new pieces of technology. The first piece is a fog machine that works as a disinfectant. The simple-to-use fog machine works by spraying a “light layer” over the car interior, which then needs to set to dry for 10 minutes, said Baquera. Once dry, the car is clean and ready for usage. The second piece of technology uses light to fight bacteria, called the GermAway UV Light. According to Baquera, this ultraviolet light is hung up at the back of the patrol car. It only needs to be turned on for 20-30 minutes to destroy any germs and viruses inside of the vehicle.

Current Safety Precautions

On top of safeguarding patrol vehicles, Roseville police have been continuing work-related matters via online briefings as well as reducing the number of people inside headquarters. While not all of us at home may have access to these wonderful fog machines or UV lights, the bright side is that we can still follow safety advice to stay clean inside our own cars. If you don’t have any antibacterial wipes lying around the house, all you need is water, dish soap, and a rag. Mix a few drops of dish soap into a small tub of warm water, and then use a rag to wipe the solution on your car interior.
