Numerous Roadway Construction Projects in Place in Placer County
Numerous roadway construction projects are taking place throughout Placer County during the month of August. These projects are being carried out by CalTrans in order to improve the quality of highways and local roads in an effort to reduce wear on vehicles and help drivers avoid dangerous accidents.
Current Construction Projects
The construction efforts were part of two separate efforts, including a 42.4 million dollar project in Auburn and over sections of State Route 49. This project is meant to rehabilitate existing drainage and pavement as well as improve on operational features of roadways and upgrade facilities for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the city.
The other project was an 11.3 million dollar project on Highway I-80 in Placer and Nevada Counties. This project is focusing on repairing and fortifying highway embankments and shoulders as well as preventing further damage from melting snow and plows. Additionally, new concrete gutters are being installed.
Together, these projects were expected to affect traffic in the area throughout the entire month while workers excavate dirt, perform electrical work, install signage, remove trees along highways, and more.
Dangerous Roads
When it comes to fault in car accidents, most people think of negligent drivers who are speeding, drunk, or otherwise irresponsibly operating their vehicle. While the majority of crashes are caused by a negligent driver, there are also many non-driver factors that can cause accidents. One common non-driver factor in auto accidents is dangerous roads.
Roads can be dangerous for a variety of reasons. In many cases, the issue is as simple as poor pavement. A large pothole or crack can force a driver to make a dangerous maneuver, leading to a serious crash. In other cases, accidents are caused by poor roadway design. If drivers are unable to easily understand the flow of traffic or can’t see oncoming vehicles, accidents can easily happen. Other dangerous roadway factors can include poor lighting, lack of amenities for cyclists and/or pedestrians, improper signage, and more.
Injury Claims and Government Entities
In cases where accidents are caused by negligent drivers, that driver is usually considered at-fault and can be held financially liable for damages. Likewise, with accidents caused by defective roads, the government entity responsible for that road can be considered negligent and held liable through a personal injury claim. This means that injured parties may be able to obtain the compensation they need for medical bills and other damages from governments themselves.
However, personal injury claims against government entities can be complicated. Critically, injured parties have a much shorter time period to file their claim, typically within 180 days of the accident. The stated purpose of this time limit is to allow governments to quickly fix dangerous issues with roads. However, it effectively puts crash survivors at a disadvantage.
