Corning Trucking Crash Kills One
On Sunday, March 22, 2020, a Corning trucking crash left one person with fatal trauma. The decedent has been identified by Tehama County authorities as a 45-year-old man. However, his full identity has not been released. In addition to the decedent, one other individual suffered injuries during the collision. California Highway Patrol (CHP) has stated that they are actively conducting an investigation into possible causes of the crash.
Collision Information
The crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on South Avenue in Corning. The 45-year-old man had been driving a 2011 Nissan Altima eastbound on South and was approaching Mary Avenue. At the same time, a 64-year-old Chico man was driving a 2014 Mack big-rig pulling a full tank of diesel fuel westbound on South, also approaching Mary Avenue.
For reasons that police say they do not currently understand, the Nissan drifted left and crossed over the roadway median, entering westbound traffic. As it crossed over, the Nissan crashed head-on into the semi-truck. Both of the vehicles sustained damages and came to a rest blocking both the eastbound and westbound portions of South Avenue.
Response
After CHP was notified regarding the crash, they dispatched a team of emergency responders to the location of the incident. When emergency officials arrived, they discovered that the Nissan driver was critically injured. Sadly, the man was pronounced deceased on-site. The big-rig driver was found with minor injuries and treated at the scene. He reportedly cooperated with investigators and was not transported to a hospital.
Investigation
As CHP continues their investigation, officers have asked for help from the public. Anybody who has information about this accident is encouraged to contact the CHP Red Bluff Area Office at (530) 527-2034 to report what they know. Officers indicated that any help would be greatly appreciated.
