An Orangevale intersection crash on September 13 caused major injuries to a pedestrian, causing them to be hospitalized. The accident occurred at the intersection of Oak and Cardwell Avenues around 1:36 p.m. An ambulance was called to the scene by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, who responded, and the patient was transported to a hospital.

The vehicle involved in the crash was described as a gray Toyota RAV4. The driver remained at the accident scene. The collision was investigated by the CHP traffic crash unit.

The Most Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

Accidents that result in severe injuries to pedestrians in an Orangevale crash can be caused by many factors. There are a number of common causes, including:

  • Driving above the speed limit: Driving at a high rate of speed is a major contributing factor to pedestrian accidents. There is less time for drivers to react when pedestrians are in their path when they speed, which leads to much more severe impacts.
  • Distractions: Another major cause of pedestrian accidents is distracted driving. For example, texting or talking on a cell phone while driving is a common distraction. If pedestrians are crossing in unmarked crosswalks or are otherwise difficult to see, drivers who aren’t paying attention to the road are more likely to strike them.
  • Impaired driving: Accidents involving pedestrians are often caused by drunk or impaired drivers. It is more likely that these drivers will make poor decisions and have slower reflexes.
  • Aggressive drivers: It is also more likely for angry or aggressive drivers to cause pedestrian accidents, which result in major injuries. It is possible that these drivers will speed up or make sudden turns without looking, which could pose a risk to pedestrians.
  • Fatigue: A motorist who is fatigued behind the wheel is a danger to others on the road. Drivers who are overly tired have impaired reactions similar to those who have consumed alcohol. Because of this, they are less likely to see a pedestrian crossing the street.

Accidents Involving Pedestrians at Intersections

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable at intersections. A pedestrian may be injured by a vehicle because multiple lanes of traffic are often going in different directions, which leads to an Orangevale crash. The need for vigilance is also increased due to bicyclists and walkers who cross the street.

Any problems with maintenance or design of an intersection can contribute to an Orangevale crash. When foliage is overgrown and obscures visibility, traffic lights malfunction or potholes and other problems exist, it increases the accident risk. An injury lawyer can investigate a pedestrian accident and determine if negligence on the part of the government entity in maintaining the area contributed to the crash. If it did, the injured person can place a claim against that government entity. The deadline in California to file such a claim is six months, so enlisting the help of a lawyer is a good idea.
