Pedicab Business Opens in Roseville
Efforts to revitalize Roseville’s downtown for the past year have been very successful. There are new developments practically every week about businesses moving into the area, and the most recent announcement, published on February 1st, shows that there will be some great new restaurants, shops, and other businesses moving into Roseville very soon.
One of these great new businesses will be Roseville Pedicabs, aka bicycle-powered taxis. Because these vehicles use human power instead of gasoline, they are great for the environment, as well as a fun way to see this beautiful town. Changes to Pedicab laws for the greater Sacramento area have helped fuel the popularity and rise in this business, as well.
However, it is important to note that the opening of the Pedicab business will increase the number of bicycles on the road. Drivers should be aware and ready to share the road to help prevent serious bicycle/auto accidents.

Collisions Between Bicyclists and Motor Vehicles on the Rise
In 2014, the LA Times reported that California led the nation for the most bicyclists killed in auto accidents. Between 2010 and 2012, according to the investigation, fatal auto accidents with bicyclists increased 16 percent, with a total of 338 bicyclists killed in these accidents during that two-year span. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) noted that accidents between cars and bicyclists that led to the cyclist’s death increased another 8.6 percent between 2012 and 2013.
For the most part, collisions between bicycles and motor vehicles occur in urban areas, and in parts of the road which are not intersections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Statistically, changes to bicycle safety laws such as requiring helmets for all cyclists regardless of age, active lights on bicycles, and adding bike lanes help reduce these tragic and deadly accidents.
While these safety measures are important to follow, regardless of local laws, it is equally important for drivers to be aware of their surroundings. Data from 2009 shows that drivers were at fault for 56 percent of accidents between a vehicle and a cyclist, and the most common type of accident was when a driver struck a cyclist from behind. Pedicabs might be larger vehicles, but with more of them on the road, drivers must keep their eyes on the road, and follow road rules more than ever.
