Accident Involving Big Rig Occurs on State Route 267
A big rig accident occurred with another vehicle that was reported southeast of Truckee on February 23 as snow continued to fall in the area. The collision occurred along State Route 267 at Mt. Watson Road shortly after 8:00 a.m. Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident involved a semi and a GMC, blocking the roadway. Injuries in the collision were not reported as of the time of this report. The accident is being investigated by the CHP to identify how it occurred.
Why a Big Rig Accident Occurs During Snowy Weather
Big rigs are more difficult to maneuver and require a longer stopping distance than passenger vehicles. In addition, they are subject to rollovers in high winds. Following are some of the most common causes of a big rig accident during inclement winter weather conditions:
- Slippery roadways: Even with snow tires or chains on the wheels, icy, wet weather can cause the surface of roads to become slippery and slick. This can lead to skidding and losing traction, causing trucks to slide into other vehicles or objects. It is important for a trucker to adjust their speed to cope with winter conditions.
- Poor maintenance: Snow and ice can take a toll on trucks, as well as any mechanical parts. Without regular maintenance, vehicles are more likely to experience issues due to the cold weather.
- Driver fatigue: Long hours of driving during winter can lead to driver fatigue, impairing their ability to focus and make safe decisions while on the road.
- Inadequate training: Drivers who are not properly trained in handling a big rig during inclement weather may be more likely to be involved in an accident.
- Poorly-equipped vehicles: Vehicles that are not sufficiently equipped for winter weather may struggle with traction, visibility and maneuverability and lead to an increased risk of a big rig accident.
- Distracted driving: Drivers who are distracted while navigating through snowy conditions may not be able to react quickly enough to avoid an accident.
- Reckless driving: When drivers ignore the rules of the road and speed, tailgate or change lanes abruptly, they can cause an accident even in the best weather conditions. In snowy weather, these actions are even more dangerous and can lead to serious collisions.
- Overloaded or improperly loaded vehicles: Trucks that are overloaded or not properly balanced can have difficulty maintaining traction in snowy weather and be more likely to get into an accident.
- Poor road conditions: Snowy weather can damage roads, making them slick, icy and difficult to navigate. Potholes, uneven pavement, and other road damage can also lead to an increased risk of accidents during winter. In accidents caused by a negligent government entity, the injured party has six months in which to file a claim. Because of this short timeline, it might be a good idea to get help from an accident lawyer.
