Redding Area Car Accident Hospitalizes Five
Five people suffered injuries requiring hospitalization in a local car accident on Sunday, April 7, 2019. The crash took place a few miles south of Redding near the community of Cottonwood. According to officers from California Highway Patrol (CHP), five people suffered injuries including one six-year-old and one four-year-old child. Reports stated that the accident involved two vehicles and CHP says that they are still investigating the accident.
Crash Information
CHP’s reports state that the accident happened at about 10:55 a.m. A 33-year-old woman from Happy Valley was driving a 2006 Chevy Malibu with the two children in her backseat. The Chevy was heading east on Bowman Road close to the Sebastian Court intersection. At the same time, a 50-year-old man from Redding had been driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla westbound on Bowman. Officers say the Toyota was also carrying a passenger.
Reports indicated that the Chevy veered into oncoming lanes for unknown reasons after the driver navigated through a turn. The Chevy entered the path of the Toyota directly after completing the turn. The driver of the Toyota reportedly tried to stop his vehicle and avoid a crash by applying the brakes but was not able to. The two cars crashed head-on inside of the westbound lane of Bowman Road. The impact of the crash caused the Toyota to spin out and come to a stop in the roadway. The Chevy continued off of the road and eventually struck a power pole on the southern side of the street.
Response
Officials who responded to the accident found all five of the individuals involved in the crash with injuries. All vehicle occupants were taken to a local hospital by ground ambulance. According to responders, the younger of the two children was seriously injured while the other suffered moderate trauma. Updates on the conditions of the injured parties have not been provided by responders.
Investigation
CHP has stated that driver intoxication does not appear to have been a factor in this car accident. Police have also said that they are still investigating whether or not proper safety equipment and restraints were properly working during the crash. However, no further suspected causes have been mentioned by investigators.
Head-on accidents are very dangerous and can be caused by many different factors. Some common head-on crash factors include driver distraction, auto product defects, fatigued driving, medical issues, and more.
