School Is Back in Session – Drive Safely!

Authorities from the Traffic Unit for the Redding Police Department are advising all drivers to carefully observe school buses that are at a complete stop in the process of picking up or dropping off students. State law requires all motorists driving in both directions of the roadway to stop when the red lights of a school bus are flashing. However, there is an exception for drivers that are driving on a multi lane road or a highway that is divided and the driver is approaching from the opposing direction to the school bus.

Bus Safety Consequences

If a motorist is found in the act of passing a school bus while driving in the same direction as the school bus when the flashing red lights are in use, there is a penalty that includes a violation with a minimum fine totaling around $664. The Redding Police Department is also advising motorists to follow the speed limit law for 25 MPH in a designated school area while children are present at all times of the day. There will be an increase in traffic enforcement for the surrounding areas of schools and school bus stops by authorities in Redding. Authorities are strictly enforcing the law for the children’s safety in school zone areas.
