Sutter County Crash on West Riego Road Kills Older Driver
An older man from Sacramento died in a crash involving a semi-trailer on October 3. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office reported they were called to an accident along West Riego Road, east of Pacific Avenue, at about 6:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered that a wide-load Peterbilt was heading east along West Riego Road behind a pilot car with flashing lights meant to warn traffic.
Nissan Driver Crashes Into Excavator Tracks in Sutter County Crash
Because of its width, the semi, although traveling west, took up part of the space in the eastbound lane due to the size of its load. A westbound Nissan SUV collided with the excavator tracks on the semi’s trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The SUV then left the roadway and went into a ditch.
Deceased Man Identified by Authorities
Although the Nissan driver was treated at the scene by medics, he did not survive the accident. The deceased man was identified as Sacramento resident Daljit Singh, age 72. The CHP traffic crash unit is continuing the investigation.

When an oversized load is being transported in California, in those more than 14 feet high, 8.6 feet wide, 40 feet long for a single trailer or 75 feet for a multiple trailer, a permit must be issued by the county and cities where the vehicle is traveling. Longer-length trailers may require one or more escort vehicles. In addition, signs, lights and flags are required for larger loads and amber marker lights are for operating after dark.
