Florin Motorcycle Crash
A motorcycle crash on the eastbound Florin Road on-ramp at State Route 99 north on July 16 caused major injuries to the rider. The accident occurred in the Florin area shortly after 1:45 in the afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The crash between a motor vehicle and the motorcyclist ejected the rider onto the roadway and blocked the ramp to oncoming traffic.
Injuries to the Motorcyclist
The CHP reported that the rider, who had Oregon plates on his bike, was transported to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center for treatment of the injuries and additional evaluation. It was reported that the rider had suffered head trauma as a result of the accident. The driver of the motor vehicle remained at the scene of the collision while authorities investigated the cause of the crash.

Because motorcycles are less crashworthy, many serious and fatal accidents happen. Overall, there are 35 times more deaths related to motorcycle crashes than other motor vehicles. Some types of accidents are more common and include:
- Head-on collisions: These account for roughly 56 percent of all motorcycle accidents with a motor vehicle. In 78 percent of such accidents, the car hits the front of the motorcycle. Conversely, the motorcycle is hit in the rear in about 5 percent of all motorcycle/car accidents. In the majority of head-on collisions, the motorcyclist is killed in the crash.
- Left-hand turns: The most problematic situation for a biker is when a motor vehicle nearby is making a left-hand turn. Generally, this accounts for 42 percent of all accidents. The motorcyclist is at risk of being struck by a turning car when they are passing through an intersection and trying to pass a motor vehicle. Usually, the turning vehicle will be considered to be at fault.
- Road hazards: Potholes, cracked pavement, and icy roads all present problems for the motorcyclist. If the road hazard is due to poor maintenance by the city or state, the injured biker may be able to claim damages. Filing a government claim is different than a regular lawsuit.
