Accident on Calvine Road Involves Hit-and-Run Driver

A multiple-vehicle crash involving a hit-and-run driver occurred in Sacramento on October 6 that left two people injured. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the collision as happening around 6:30 p.m. along eastbound Calvine Road and Cliffcrest Drive in the Florin area. According to a witness to the accident, the driver of a silver or blue Chevy Silverado was driving recklessly before the accident happened.

Several Injuries Reported in Multiple-Vehicle Crash

Emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived to assess injuries, and two people were exported to a nearby hospital for further assessment and treatment. The witness to the accident remained at the scene, and officers believe they have identified the suspect vehicle’s registered owner. The accident is being investigated to determine how it occurred.

Reasons for a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

One of the main reasons for the horrific results of a multiple-vehicle crash is the effect speed has. For the most part, such collisions happen on high-speed and high capacity roads. Under the circumstances, the individual vehicles have little room to maneuver away from the other cars involved in the collision. When this happens on high-speed highways, the potential for severe injuries and fatalities is high. Several other causes of a crash of this type are:

  • Bad weather: The reasons that bad weather can precipitate a multiple-vehicle crash are driver related. The decision to proceed at high speed is the main reason inclement weather has a harmful effect. Drivers should slow down to accommodate the weather, but many don’t. Extra caution is essential.
  • Fatigued driving: Motorists who get behind the wheel while tired can cause a multiple-vehicle accident by falling asleep.
  • Distracted driving: On long trips on a highway, it is easy to become distracted. As soon as a driver takes their eyes off the road, a collision can occur.
  • Impaired driving: When a driver is impaired, their ability to drive is affected. This impairment includes lessened reaction time, lack of muscle coordination, and loss of reasoning. Drunk driving is the chief cause of accidents behind distracted driving.
  • Rubbernecking: When drivers are more concerned with an accident or a police stop than focusing on the road ahead, crashes can occur.
  • Construction zone mistakes: Construction zones have narrow passageways and are often confusing. Given the circumstances, a driver who fails to be cautious can initiate a crash.
  • Tailgating another vehicle: A driver who is tailgating another car or truck is often reckless. Thus, they are often driving above the speed limit and not leaving enough room to stop quickly in case of a slowdown or an emergency. This often leads to a collision involving multiple vehicles.

What Are the Most Common Types of Multiple-Vehicle Accidents

It is common to see the following types of multiple-vehicle crashes:

  • Highways: As we said earlier, highways are a common location for multiple-vehicle accidents. Due to traffic congestion, it is possible to see pile-ups of 10 to 25 vehicles.
  • Intersections: Many drivers rush through an intersection. Because of the number of vehicles sharing an intersection, this can lead to a multiple-vehicle crash.
  • Rear-end collisions: This type of accident is one of the most common. When a vehicle pushes another car into the one in front of it, many vehicles can become involved.

Investigating a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

Because of the complexity of such accidents, it is essential to carefully investigate the scene to determine liability. We send our investigators out to do the following:

  • Interview all witnesses to the accident
  • Use accident reconstruction to determine liability
  • Obtain videos of the crash from traffic surveillance cameras
  • Review police reports for inaccuracies
