Sacramento Parking Meter Increase
Sacramento City Council is about to consider increasing the rate of parking meters in Sacramento. This, they say, is part of “a modernization effort.”
A Sacramento parking meter increase is an insult. An insult we’re not buying. This is just another attempt to discourage people from parking downtown!
When will this discussion take place?
The City Council will discuss these matters, November 10, 2015.
How much of an increase?
The price increase could be as much as 50 cents. This means parking would increase to $1.75 per hour.
We say it is just another attempt to fleece the citizens of Sacramento and stuff the government coffers.
Switching to Automation
Tonight, the City Council will also discuss adopting a 30-day experiment which would allow drivers to pay an increased rate for a third hour of parking, plus an even higher rate for each additional hour.
What geographical area will this take place?
The experiment will occur in Old Sacramento and in an around the Handle District (18th and L Streets).
What will the cost be in this test area?
The new rate would be $3 for a third hour and then $3.75 for each additional hour.
What happens if my meter expires?
You will receive a $47.50 parking ticket.
Spotzone
This parking meter experiment, or pilot program, is called SpotZone. If the council determines that their pilot program is meeting and/or exceeding its goals they will consider expanding the program all over the city. The goal they are trying to meet and/or exceed is to improve the circulation of people around the city and encourage parking garage use.
Last year over 4,300 new parking meter machines were installed in and around Sacramento that take credit and debit cards for payment. They also allow for a customer to download an app and use their smartphone to make a payment.
Other Parking Options
To park in a city-owned garage is about $3.00. Other parking garages, structures and areas are also available and may cost much more.
More Bad News
Did we mention that the council will also consider imposing meters on Sundays and extending parking hours beyond the 6 p.m. cut-off?
Cha-ching! I guess they prefer we shop in Elk Grove and other neighboring cities where the parking is free.
