Losing a Loved One in a Hit-and-Run
It is always a terrible experience to lose a loved one but even more so when they were snatched from you by someone else’s negligence. It deprives the family of being able to say goodbye and offering that final hug. It fills them with grief and anger and the need for justice. Over the years, my law firm has successfully handled many cases of this type by locating the hit-and-run driver and bringing justice to the family through a wrongful death claim. Although it will not fill the void in their lives, it can reduce the financial stress of sudden death and the possible loss of income.
Coping With Grief
Many people want to express their sympathy and show their support following a death. However, they are unsure of how to do that. Some of the suggestions that follow might help:
- Send over food prepared at home or ordered out.
- Call to express your sympathy or visit if it is permitted and just be a good listener.
- Offer to run errands, babysit children, or pick up prescriptions or groceries. Name something specific. Otherwise, the grieving person will not take you up on your offer.
- Take a grieving person for an outing to eat or run an errand. Staying home alone with their thoughts all the time is not healthy.
- Accompany a grieving person to the funeral home to support them when they make the arrangements. This difficult task is easier if there is a supportive person along.
- Remember that grief does not end after the funeral. It’s important to be available to the grieving person to help them through their struggle.
Finding the Hit-and-Run Driver
Our office has often been successful in locating a hit-and-run driver because we investigate to locate them. In addition to reviewing the police record for errors and talking to the witnesses to find out what they saw, our investigators go a lot further. They perform accident reconstruction, which includes gathering evidence at the hit-and-run scene, looking for paint streaks from the vehicle and parts that were dropped. This can help determine the make and model of the car and even the year.
Cameras from nearby traffic and road installations are also sought because they may have captured the accident on video. Once the driver is located, he or she can be held responsible for the fatality. Although it will not alleviate the family’s grief, it can help ease their financial stress.
