Motorist Reportedly Hit by Fleeing Semi Along I-5

An injury accident involving a reported hit-and-run with a semi occurred in the area of North Natomas on September 14. The accident happened just before 5:00 p.m. along southbound Interstate 5 just north of the Arena Boulevard off-ramp. When officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrived at the scene, they discovered a Subaru Forester along with another vehicle on the right-hand side.

Authorities May Have License Number of Hit-and-Run Semi

One of the drivers said their vehicle had been struck by a yellow tractor-trailer that then left the scene of the accident. Police said they possibly had the license plate number of the semi. The accident was transferred to responders with the Sacramento Fire Department, who determined that injuries had occurred in the hit-and-run. The accident is being investigated by the CHP to locate the semi driver and determine what happened.

Accidents With Big Rigs

Professional drivers operate these big, heavy vehicles daily. Their understanding of the rules of the road and accident procedures is included in what they learn when they get their commercial driver’s license (CDL), so being involved in a collision and leaving the scene is probably deliberate.

Accidents Involving Hit-and-Run Big Rigs

When it becomes evident that a trucker is at fault for an accident, the reason might be crucial to your injury claim. In large vehicles, a driver may not notice a minor accident, such as backing into another vehicle. However, negligence can also play a part in the cause of a fleeing trucker. This is due to a number of factors, including:

  • After letting their policy lapse, the truck driver operated the vehicle uninsured.
  • It may be that the driver has a record of traffic citations and has been warned by his or her employer that if there is another mishap, their job will be at risk.
  • Drugs or alcohol may have been in the driver’s system at the time of the accident, which could result in his/her arrest and loss of their CDL license.
  • During the accident, a driver was distracted by texting or another activity, taking his or her attention off the surrounding traffic and road.
  • In addition to steep fines and a license suspension, the driver did not have the proper endorsements for their cargo or necessary placards.
  • The trucker was speeding to get to their destination either because of pressure from their employer or so they could turn around and deliver more cargo.
  • The driver was violating federal and state regulations on the number of hours they could be on the road or by not taking the required rest breaks.
  • The trucker had been falsifying their driving records.

How an Injury Lawyer Can Help

An injury lawyer can locate the driver and determine if they were violating traffic laws or breaking regulations, which caused them to commit the hit-and-run. A conviction for a hit-and-run can be used in civil court as proof of the accident. By building a strong case, the lawyer may be able to obtain compensation for their client to cover their medical expenses, lost wages and for their pain and suffering.
