Single Vehicle Without Front End Found on State Route 99 South

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento car accident lawyer. A collision involving one vehicle occurred on May 27 in Elk Grove, however, the driver reportedly kept going and ended up being found in a different area. When the vehicle was located by California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, it was smoking and missing its front end, while the male driver was still inside and reportedly trying to leave the scene.

What Happened

The smoking vehicle was reported to the CHP around 6:30 in the morning at State Route 99 South near the Sheldon Road Exit Ramp in South Sacramento. Officials believe the vehicle, described as a small black sedan, may have come through a fence in an earlier collision at West Stockton and Jacinto. The driver was reported as being possibly disoriented. A tow truck was called as well as emergency medical personnel to assess the driver. Neither alcohol nor drugs have been ruled out as a possible cause for the collision. The accident remains under investigation by the CHP.

Causes of Disorientation in a Driver

Accidents of this type may be due to a number of conditions such as drugged or drunk driving, a medical condition such as a seizure disorder, Alzheimer’s or severe diabetes or a head injury. When an accident is caused by negligence, an injured person may file a personal injury action to obtain compensation.

Drunk Driving

Drunk driving costs the lives of almost 29 people every day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and endangers everyone else on the roadways. Alcohol consumption affects the individual by making changes in judgment and depth perception as well as slowing reaction time and the ability to operate a vehicle safely.

A Driver Can Lose His or Her License Due to a Medical Condition

In California under Vehicle Code Sections 13800 and 13801, dangerous drivers can have their license revoked because of a medical condition that makes it unsafe to be behind the wheel of a car. The Department of Motor Vehicles has the authority to investigate complaints of unsafe drivers. A medical condition that might result in a license being cancelled is one where the individual does not have the skill, knowledge, judgment or physical ability to drive a vehicle. Those who drive with a medical condition that would preclude their ability to have a license may become involved in an accident, causing serious injuries.

Head Injuries

Suffering a brain injury can adversely affect an individual’s ability to drive. Following are some of the effects a traumatic brain injury can have on a driver:

  • Vision may be affected.
  • Maintaining concentration may be more difficult for longer periods.
  • Reaction time may be slowed.
  • Staying in one lane can be a problem for those who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.
  • Memory may be impaired and affect the driver’s ability to remember directions or locations.
  • Hand to eye coordination may be affected.
  • The driver may not be able to understand making safe moves versus risky moves in the vehicle.
  • The ability to solve problems may be affected, reducing the thought process needed to react in an emergency.
