Solano Authorities Identify Two Killed During Wildfires
On Thursday, August 27, 2020, the Solano County Sheriff’s Department (SCSD) reported the identity of a man who was one of two area residents who tragically lost their lives as a result of the LNU Lightning Complex wildfires. The man was identified as Douglas Mai, an 82-year-old Vacaville resident. The other decedent was identified two days earlier as Leon James Bone, a 64-year-old man and also a Vacaville resident.
Mai was reportedly discovered by firefighters on the 7000 block of Pleasants Valley Road in northwest Vacaville while Bone was found in the English Hills area of the city. Both of these locations were on the outskirts of Vacaville and were some of the communities most dramatically affected by the fires.
The LNU Lighting Complex Fires
The LNU Lightning Complex fires were ignited on August 17 in Sonoma and Napa Counties. Hot weather, dry grass, and wind caused the fire to spread through Lake, Yolo, and Solano Counties. Altogether, the LNU fires have destroyed well over 1,000 structures and, according to Cal Fire, still present a significant risk to an estimated 30,500 buildings. Additionally, at least five people across all counties affected by the LNU fires have lost their lives, and an unknown number of people have suffered injuries.
Containment of the fires has recently increased, and a few evacuation orders in Solano County have since been lifted. However, the fire also recently crossed over a highway and threatened homes in rural Yolo County close to Rumsey, prompting a round of new evacuation orders on Wednesday. Updated information regarding current evacuations and fire containment can be found on Cal Fire’s website. As of the latest reports, the LNU Lightning Complex fires were at 41 percent containment.
