I’m Ed Smith, a Rio Vista car accident lawyer. California Highway Patrol (CHP)’s Solano, South Sacramento, and Stockton Offices are using funds from a federal grant to institute a year-long traffic safety campaign on Highway 12 throughout the counties of Sacramento, Solano, and San Joaquin.

The campaign’s funding was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grant had released funds as of October 1, 2017, and will continue funding the project until September 30, 2018.

The Campaign

CHP offices will be deploying additional officers for enhanced enforcement duties along the highway, which is known for its high rate of collisions. The traffic safety campaign will reportedly include a community-based task force as well as education and public awareness campaigns that aim to reinforce important highway safety messages.

CHP Captain Mark Headrick, the commander of the Solano CHP office, stated in a press release that the public education campaign will be focused on a single slogan – ‘Drive to Stay Alive.’ CHP hopes that the focus on this slogan will reduce the frequency of collisions that occur on the dangerous stretch of highway. Headrick also stated that the grant is expected to keep the momentum of prior enforcement and education campaigns as CHP continues to attempt to save lives.

This video will give you an idea of some of the poor driving habits that the CHP seeks to curb from our California drivers. Poor habits include driving through flood waters, speeding, texting and taking video while driving and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

The Problem

According to data taken from CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, a total of 81 individuals were fatally or seriously injured as the result of 45 separate traffic accidents on unincorporated roads and state highways patrolled by CHP Stockton, South Sacramento, and Solano area jurisdictions in the year between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015.

The leading primary accident factors in these collisions were speed limit violations, improper turning, impaired driving, automobile right-of-way violations, and stop sign/traffic light violations. CHP reported that the campaign will be focusing on reducing these accident-causing factors as a way to reduce overall accidents. According to the data, the most common injury-causing accident factor is speeding, which, in Solano County, is to blame for around one-third of all accidents involving traumatic injuries.

Driving Safely

Although CHP’s efforts are expected to lower your chances of being involved in an accident while using Highway 12, the risk of serious car collisions can never be entirely eliminated. However, in addition to enforcement programs, there are many measures that drivers themselves can take in order to keep roads safe.

Ways for drivers to reduce the likelihood of injury-causing accidents include things such as avoiding sending text messages or taking phone calls while driving, routinely making sure that your vehicle is in proper working order before hitting the road, paying close attention to traffic signs including speed limits and yield signs, and ensuring that you are not impaired by substances or fatigue while operating a vehicle.
