I’m Ed Smith, a South Sacramento Hit and Run Accident Attorney. Monday night a bicyclist was killed in a hit and run accident in South Sacramento along Stockton Boulevard just north of Gerber Road at about 9:00 pm.
What happened?
Police are investigating the death of a bicycle rider described as a black man about 50-years-old, who has yet to be identified. At this time the California Highway Patrol (CHP) does not have a description of the hit and run vehicle. Police are asking that anyone with information call the California Highway Patrol.
Increase in hit and run accidents
This is the third fatal hit and run in the South Sacramento area this year, one happened along Stockton and San Francisco boulevards and another on Meadowview Road. California has seen a steady increase in the number of hit and run accidents. Pedestrian injuries and bicycle accidents account for 53 percent of all catastrophic injuries and fatalities in California in 2011 according to statistics. California is working on strengthening consequences against hit and run drivers who recklessly disregard the lives of others while driving. New bills are being proposed to create a Yellow Alert system similar to the Amber alert, it would notify other drivers with a description of the vehicle involved in a hit and run accident. There is also a bill which would suspend the licenses of those involved such accidents.
Wrong Impressions
Sometimes, my clients think they need to find the hit and run driver in order for them to recover damages for the injuries they sustained (including death). Most of the time, this is absolutely not the case. So long as the person hit by the hit and run motorist owned a car or someone else in his or her home owns a vehicle, they will likely be covered by that policy of insurance.
