Stanislaus Sheriff’s Deputy Involved in Crash

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a crash on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 30, 2021. The traffic collision occurred on Highway 99 at the Kiernan Avenue exit.

Details on the Modesto Crash That Involved a Stanislaus Sheriff’s Deputy

CHP traffic officers revealed in a preliminary report that the Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy was on-duty at the time of the motor vehicle crash. The sheriff’s deputy was driving his cruiser and took the Kiernan Avenue exit from northbound Highway 99. He reportedly pulled into the intersection at the exit and was allegedly hit on the driver’s side by an Acura that was traveling eastbound on Kiernan Avenue.

CHP reported that both motorists sustained injuries described as minor. The sheriff’s deputy suffered shoulder pain while the Acura driver, a 37-year-old woman, sustained a small cut on her right hand and had complaints of pain. Neither party was taken to the hospital for the injuries they suffered, officials reported. An investigation into the car accident in Modesto is ongoing by CHP, and fault has not yet been assigned for the incident.

What You Should Know About Government Vehicle Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

While we expect the government to keep us safe, that does not necessarily happen in all cases. There are situations when a vehicle owned and operated by the government may be involved in a car accident that may cause harm to others. In such situations, it is essential for an injured party to understand their rights and options for seeking compensation from a negligent public agency.

When seeking financial recovery from a public agency for damages caused by one of its employees operating a government vehicle, a claimant must deal with the entity itself by filing a notice of claim, and this must be done immediately. Under the California Government Code Section 911.2, these claims must be filed within six months of the accident date. Failure to comply with the shortened statute of limitations may result in a denial of the claim and the loss of the right to financial compensation.

A lawsuit against a government entity is much more challenging than one against another driver, and if possible, it is essential to retain legal counsel to assist you in building a strong personal injury case. The public agency will have their own team of attorneys on their side, and you should have one too when seeking financial recovery of economic and non-economic damages.
