Stockton Pedestrian Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton Pedestrian Accident Attorney. A pedestrian was struck by a car this morning as he was walked along northbound Highway 5, near Charter Road in Stockton.

Was the Pedestrian Fatally Injured?

There is no word yet on the condition of the pedestrian. Traffic was backed up for miles as authorities closed down the two left hand lanes of travel on northbound Highway 5. Motorists had to be diverted into the right hand lane causing a back up in traffic for miles. Many decided to take an alternate route along Highway 99. That spawned another accident near Wilson Way. Highway 99 turned out to be more congested than Highway 5.

Pedestrian Accidents

Everyone is a pedestrian at some point or another. Most of us know that when we are walking it is important to keep a safe distance between ourselves and moving vehicles. It is equally important to be hyper-vigilant to our surroundings and not become distracted by looking down into our phone screen while walking or tuning out the sounds going on around us by having our ears inclined to our favorite music. If we want to live we need to pay attention. It’s important to remember that drivers in the vehicles surrounding us may be distracted as well. So we must walk defensively at all times.

Where You Choose To Walk

Where you choose to walk is another important consideration for pedestrians. Dangerous intersections can be looked up by anyone on Google. It is not too difficult to get historical information pertaining to highways, streets and intersections where accidents frequently occur. Many are broken down by type of collision (pedestrian, bicyclist, drunk driving, fatality). Knowing this information about a particular area is one way to avoid a collision and ensure your safety and the safety of your family members. Simply choose an alternate route.

Pedestrians Are Prohibited From Walking Along the Freeway

Walking along the freeway is prohibited in California unless your vehicle has broken down and you are trying to get assistance. Yet is not uncommon to see transients walking along the freeway trying to get from point a to point b. This can be extremely risky for both the pedestrian and motorists. Even so, pedestrians still keep walking along the freeway oblivious to the inherent danger of doing so.

Pedestrian Injuries

A pedestrian who has been seriously injured in a collision with a motor vehicle faces the possibility of a wide variety of injuries. In many pedestrian crashes, the head, legs and arms of a pedestrian are struck the most severely. Some common injuries from a pedestrian crash include the following:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), which many times lead to a coma;
  • Spinal Injuries, including paraplegia or quadriplegia;
  • Limb amputations;
  • Broken and/or fractured bones;
  • Permanent scarring and disfigurement;
  • Death

An individual who has been seriously injured, or who has lost someone they love, following a crash between a pedestrian and motor vehicle should immediately contact an experienced Stockton pedestrian accident attorney.
