Driver Facing Multiple Charges in Injury Accident
Two others were also transported to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The driver of one of the vehicles, age 25, was allegedly driving under the influence when the deadly crash occurred. Although he was also taken to a hospital with injuries, when he is released, the suspect is expected to be booked at the jail on charges including DUI and vehicular manslaughter. The identity of the woman who died as a result of the crash has not yet been released, pending notification of the family.
How Drunk Drivers Cause Accidents
Drunk drivers can cause serious and sometimes fatal accidents. Alcohol impairs a person’s ability to make sound decisions, as well as their motor skills and reaction time. As a result, many people who drive under the influence of alcohol are unable to react in time to avoid collisions with other vehicles or pedestrians. Furthermore, judgment is impaired, leading some drunk drivers to think that it is safe for them to speed or take risks that would be dangerous for any sober motorist.
In addition, the effects of alcohol on an individual’s vision can have serious consequences when behind the wheel and cause a fatal or injury accident. Alcohol slows down how quickly a person’s eyes adapt from dark to light conditions and back again, making it more difficult for them to see other cars, pedestrians or obstacles in their way. Furthermore, alcohol reduces the ability to stay focused on other vehicles and objects on the road while driving. The combination of all these factors can make an impaired driver a serious hazard to themselves and others on the road.
Recovering Compensation After a Crash Caused by a Drunk Driver
If you or a loved one were injured in an injury accident caused by a drunk driver or you lost a loved one, it is important to understand your legal rights. You could be able to retrieve injury compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other damages you incurred as a result of the crash or file a claim for wrongful death.
In the aftermath of such a traumatic incident, it can be difficult to think about filing a lawsuit. However, taking legal action is often necessary to ensure that individuals who cause serious harm are held accountable for their actions.
Punitive Damages After Being Injured by a Drunk Driver
In addition to seeking compensation for your medical bills and other accident-related expenses, you could recover punitive damages when your crash was caused by a drunk driver. Punitive damages are typically sought in cases involving malicious or willful behavior. In the case of drunk driving accidents, they are meant to punish and deter individuals from driving while intoxicated in the future.
