Tahoe Area Woman Identified In Southern California Airplane Accident

On Monday, September 28, 2020, a woman from the Lake Tahoe Area was identified after she was involved in an airplane accident off the coast of Santa Barbara. The woman was identified by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) as Deborah Nicholson, a 61-year-old resident of a rural area outside of Lake Tahoe. According to officials, Nicholson was the only individual involved in this accident.

Accident Details

According to reports, Nicholson was flying a single-engine Cessna 182 Skylane on Sunday, September 27, 2020. According to the Santa Barbara Airport, Nicholson lost communication with flight controllers at approximately 7:10 a.m. while her plane was leaving to return to Lake Tahoe. Officials have stated that it is believed that the plane crashed into the sea around two miles off of UC Santa Barbara’s Campus Point in the Isla Vista area.

After Nicholson lost communication, rescue crews, including helicopters, were sent to search for her. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched responders. Crews were able to locate plane debris as well as an oily patch on the ocean that reportedly smelled like airplane fuel. Responders reportedly searched for Nicholson in waters at depths of around 200 feet. However, she has not yet been located, and the Coast Guard has called off their search, handing the responsibility over to SBSD. County authorities reportedly have enlisted diving crews from Los Angeles to continue the search.

Investigation

This incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not indicated what could have caused the tragic accident. The Federal Aviation Administration indicated that they will be investigating the accident, but stated that they would not begin their investigation until the plane was recovered from the water.

In many cases, plane accidents happen due to things that pilots aren’t able to control. In many cases, this means that a part of the plane malfunctions, putting the pilot in a very dangerous situation. In these cases, the manufacturer of the plane may be considered an at-fault party to the accident, meaning that families can attempt to hold these companies financially responsible for damages.

Wrongful Death Claims

Losing a person that you care about can be incredibly difficult, and people suffering from grief often feel overwhelmed or may even be in a state of shock. These feelings can be especially hard to cope with if you lost your loved one in a sudden, preventable accident. During such a traumatic period, it’s important to focus on healing emotionally and to spend time with your loved ones.

However, losing someone in your life can also have a huge financial impact. Families often experience a sudden, serious loss of income after deadly accidents and may be surprised to find out how expensive funeral and burial services are. In order to make sure your family is compensated for these damages, it’s vital to call a wrongful death lawyer as soon as you possibly can.
