Tam O Shanter Drive Pedestrian Injury Accident Occurs With Motor Vehicle
A serious pedestrian injury accident occurred on June 13 at El Dorado Hills. The walker was struck by a motor vehicle during the early morning hours. The crash occurred around 6:17 a.m. along Tam O Shanter Drive near the back of Stephen Harris Park, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) accident report.
Walker Transported to Hospital With Major Injuries
After being examined by medics with the El Dorado Hills Fire Department, it was determined the pedestrian had suffered major injuries. Medics transported the walker to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The vehicle was removed from the scene. The CHP traffic accident investigation unit is determining how the collision occurred and assigning fault.
Accident Injuries Sustained by Pedestrians
Pedestrian accidents often result in the following injuries:
- Broken bones: Accidents involving broken bones are more likely to happen to people on foot. Simple or compound fractures can occur.
- Back and spinal cord trauma: Back injuries can include ruptured discs and other types of trauma, which can be disabling. Spinal cord injuries are even more severe and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis.
- Traumatic brain injuries: Brain injuries can have a devastating effect on a person’s life. Surgery may be required if the brain has been injured in a traumatic way, such as bruising. Some suffer permanent damage and are dependent on lifelong care due to cognitive impairment.
The Causes of a Pedestrian Injury Accident
Recent years have seen an increase in pedestrian accidents. A number of factors contribute to this increase, including:
- Distracted driving: Talking on a cell phone, texting, tuning a radio and other distractions take the driver’s focus off watching and reacting to surrounding traffic.
- Speed: Speeding is a common reason for pedestrian injuries. Speeding means the driver needs a longer distance to stop to avoid a collision. Due to speeding, the motorist may also be slower to react if someone is in the roadway or crossing the street.
- Running a red light: Running a red light or stop sign at an intersection is a common cause of a pedestrian injury accident.
- Drunk driving: The presence of alcohol plays a significant role in many pedestrian accidents. Impaired drivers lose their ability to control their vehicles and think clearly.
