Elon Musk Unveils Tesla’s First Fully Electric Semi Truck
The commercial transportation industry will soon see a shift in change improvement. On Thursday, December 1, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the much-anticipated Tesla Semi, an all-electric commercial truck.
Speaking at a live event in Nevada, Musk told the audience he hopes the Tesla Semi will shake up the trucking industry. He said this new electric truck has crazy power, three times the strength of any diesel truck currently on the road.
Good for the Environment
Musk said the primary goal of the Tesla Semi is to combat climate change, create sustainable energy and reduce carbon emissions.
According to a recent study by the American Lung Association, long-haul trucks and delivery vans represent about 6 percent of vehicles in the country. However, these vehicles generate excessive pollution, including nearly 60 percent ozone emissions and over 25 percent greenhouse gas emissions.
From a health standpoint, Musk said this is a huge impact, especially in larger cities. These emissions can have devastating health effects on those living near ports, warehouses, and other highways with a lot of trucking activity.
Production of the Tesla Semi was Delayed
The development of the Tesla Semi started in 2017. However, production got delayed due to the Covid pandemic, battery cell supply issues, and other issues.
While the Tesla Semi was developing, other fully electric commercial trucks were introduced. Auto manufacturers like Renault Trucks, Daimler, and Nikola have already produced and delivered heavy-duty full electric trucks to customers.
But the Tesla Semi prides itself on some high-tech features not available in the competitors’ trucks, such as a fast-charging system and a battery with greater range.
Tesla Semi Trucks are Easy to Operate
According to Musk, the Semi is simple to drive, more manageable than the Model 3 and can be operated without training. A vast difference between other heavy-duty trucks and the Tesla Semi is the placement of the driver’s seat and steering wheel.
Instead of using the left side, the Semi was designed with the steering wheel in the center of the vehicle with a touchscreen monitor on each side of the trucker.
The Tesla Semi successfully completed a 500-mile trip with an 80,000-pound load in November between Nevada, Fremont, and San Diego.
