CDC Issues a Warning
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a stern warning regarding the dangers of vaping THC. Specifically, the CDC warned about using products that are purchased off the street. The CDC issued this warning because it is difficult for people to know if the substances they are buying off the street have been altered in some way. If the substances are contaminated, they can be extremely harmful to someone’s health. This warning comes amidst a serious public health epidemic across the country, which many officials believe has been tied to vaping.
The Dangers of THC
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the marijuana compound that is responsible for the drug’s psychoactive effects. In essence, THC gives marijuana its high. THC binds to the pleasure receptors in the brain and impact the individual’s concentration, coordination, perception of time, and memory. THC also has the potential to cause hallucinations and delusions.
The risks of consuming THC are substantial. THC is addictive, can decrease IQ and cognition (especially in younger people), and can severely impair motor skills. When people consume THC in vape form, the risks are even higher. Often, people who consume THC via e-cigarette do so by either dripping or dabbing. In both of these methods, oil-based THC is superheated to an extreme compound. The oil-based THC has a much higher concentration of THC than in marijuana smoke. As a result, severe health impacts have been noted.
Severe Respiratory Impacts
Some of the vape pens sold on the street are heated to extremely high temperatures. When this happens, the coil releases its own set of toxic chemicals. Combined with the chemicals released when THC is heated, a dangerous mixture results. Doctors have stated that the lungs do not react well to these compounds. Some of the diagnoses include illnesses such as bronchiolitis obliterans, also called popcorn lung. This respiratory disease is irreversible and can lead to long-term chronic lung disease. This lung disease can have severe impacts on someone’s quality of life.
The Number of Cases is Growing
A recent announcement from the CDC puts the total number of cases related to vaping at more than 200. These cases have been reported in 25 states across the nation. Of note, the exact number may be considerably higher. Reports say another 350 cases are still being investigated to see if they are also related to vaping.
This mysterious respiratory illness is hazardous. Health officials say symptoms include a severe cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Many individuals have also reported fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The symptoms tend to appear gradually over several weeks. Ultimately, some people have ended up in the ICU.
Because of this, the CDC is issuing a stern warning regarding vaping, particularly in young individuals. It is essential for everyone to listen to the advice of the CDC and stay away from these products.
