Traffic Blocked by Three-Vehicle Accident in Rio Linda

A three-vehicle accident between a BMW, a Ford Ranger and a Nissan injured one person on June 11. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the crash occurred shortly after 9:40 in the morning on Rio Linda Boulevard in the vicinity of G Street. Paramedics were called to the accident site to render assistance to the injured individual. The highway was blocked by the three-vehicle accident, and tow trucks were needed to haul the vehicles away.

An investigation into the cause of the accident was begun and is ongoing at the time of this report. It is unknown if speeding or drugs/alcohol were to blame for the incident.

Rear-End Accidents Common in Multiple-Vehicle Collisions

Of all types of accidents, rear-end accidents are considered to be the most common, causing 29 percent of all crashes. Reasons that rear-end accidents occur are:

  • Tailgating: Frequently, the car to the rear is following the lead vehicles too closely when this type of accident happens. The driver of the car in the rear position is responsible for leaving enough room between their vehicle and the one in front of them. In a three-vehicle accident, this can push one car into another in succession.
  • Distraction: This is a common cause of rear-end accidents. In many cases, the traffic signal has changed and vehicles have slowed.
  • Brake problems: If the brakes fail to work properly, a rear-end collision may occur.
  • Drunk driving: An inebriated driver lacks quick reactions, and any change in traffic flow can become a problem for them.

Fault in a Rear-End Accident

In the majority of rear-end crashes, the driver to the rear is negligent. However, in a few cases, the lead driver is also at fault for the accident. Having a personal injury lawyer on your side is important since determining liability is a crucial aspect of any case. Without this vital information, the case may never be processed, leaving the injured party to bear the brunt of both physical and financial losses.

Your attorney will be able to see if the person who caused the accident was negligent in several ways. It is possible to check cell phone records to see if the person was on a call or texting when the accident happened. It is also possible to check if the person was speeding or tailgating the lead driver.

How Can the Lead Driver Be at Fault?

Some of the ways the lead driver can be at fault for a rear-end crash are:

  • A vehicle pulls out suddenly in front of another car or light truck.
  • A vehicle is backing up and hits the front of the vehicle to the rear.
  • A car or truck brakes suddenly, causing the vehicle to the rear to hit it.
  • A vehicle has non-functioning brake lights, and a car to the rear is unaware they are slowing down or stopping.

Injuries in a Rear-End Accident

While there are a variety of injuries that result from a rear-end accident, cervical (neck) strain and sprain are the most common. This is commonly referred to as whiplash. It occurs when the neck and head of the driver is forced into a rapid back and forth motion similar to cracking a whip.

Some whiplash symptoms are:

  • Pain increases with movement
  • Headache that originates at the base of the skull
  • Stiffness and pain in the neck
  • Decreased range of motion in the cervical area
  • Accompanying shoulder, upper back or arm pain
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms

Investigation in a Three-Vehicle Crash

Our firm is committed to finding the evidence needed to prove fault. Our investigators use accident reconstruction techniques to determine how the crash occurred. We also obtain surveillance video from traffic lights to see the accident in real-time. In addition, our investigators check for deficient brakes or broken tail lights to add to our picture of the crash. Once we have compiled enough evidence to prove fault, we turn the data over to our legal team to build a strong case for our clients.
