Accident at Hillsdale Boulevard Intersection Causes Injuries
A three-vehicle hit-and-run crash resulted in injuries on December 15 in Sacramento. The collision occurred around 8:24 p.m. at the intersection of westbound Hillsdale and Elkhorn boulevards in the Foothill Farms area. The incident report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that one of the drivers fled the scene following the collision.
Authorities Seek Driver in Hit-and-Run Crash
Tow trucks had to be called to remove the other two vehicles. Although injuries in the hit-and-run crash were reported, no details were provided. The CHP is conducting an investigation to determine the accident’s cause and is seeking the hit-and-run driver.
Causes of a Hit-and-Run Crash
Those who are injured by a fleeing driver probably wonder why someone crashed into their vehicle and left the scene. However, many of these drivers probably have a reason for continuing on, such as:
- The driver is unlicensed, or their license has expired.
- The motorist has outstanding warrants, is transporting drugs, or has weapons in the vehicle.
- The fleeing driver is drunk driving.
- They are driving a stolen vehicle.
- The vehicle is uninsured or underinsured.
- The driver just panics and leaves. In these instances, the driver may turn themselves in once they become calm and think about it.
Can a Hit-and-Run Driver Be Located?
My law office has located a number of drivers following a hit-and-run crash over the years. We do this by working with authorities and conducting our own investigation to locate the vehicle and driver. Among the areas we concentrate on are:
- The investigators go to the scene of the hit-and-run to collect evidence to identify the make and model of the vehicle. This can include paint smears or dropped metal pieces. Since manufacturers use specific colors and parts, it can be helpful.
- Area business and traffic surveillance cameras are checked to see if the hit-and-run crash was captured on film. If it was, that film can be subpoenaed.
- The police report is examined for evidence and to ensure its accuracy.
- The investigators conduct interviews with any witnesses to the hit-and-run crash. A witness can often describe or identify the vehicle. Sometimes, they can describe the driver behind the wheel. At times, a witness filmed the accident just as it happened, which provides invaluable evidence against the driver.
- Accident reconstruction is performed, which indicates how the collision occurred and often points toward which driver/drivers were at fault.
When the evidence has been gathered, our injury lawyers use it in constructing a claim that supports compensation for our client.
Recoverable Damages Following a Car Accident
An injured person can claim the following damages in an accident that was caused by a negligent motorist:
- All medical bills that arise as a result of the accident can be recovered. This includes hospitalization, physician bills, ambulance fees, testing, surgeries, prescription medicines, and rehabilitation. If the accident injury is expected to continue into the future or results in disability, those costs are factored into the settlement.
- Lost wages that occur because the injured person cannot work due to the accident can be recovered. This compensation includes other monies the individual normally earned, including bonuses, tips and others.
- Pain and suffering the individual experienced due to the accident can be recovered. Because emotional and psychological pain is often involved after a traffic accident, such as loss of consortium, affection and moral support, it may be recoverable also.
