Three-Vehicle Collision Reported at Kenneth Avenue Intersection
A traffic accident involving three vehicles in Orangevale on May 19 may have involved a drunk driver. The accident was reported at the intersection of Kenneth Avenue and Greenback Lane around 12:39 p.m. and involved two SUVs and a pickup truck. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report, at least two of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Toxicology was notified to test one of the drivers, who is suspected of being intoxicated. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
Drunk Drivers Pose a Danger to Other Road Users
Other drivers are faced with a challenging situation when they see a drunk driver on the road. Due to their inebriated state, drunk drivers have difficulty tracking with their eyes, speed up and slow down, weave in and out of their lane and cannot make fast decisions. Oftentimes, they aren’t able to stop in an emergency, and a drunk driver is more likely than any other motorist to enter a highway going the wrong way. DUI accidents often result in severe or fatal injuries.
Drunk Drivers Cause Many Fatalities Every Day Around the Country
Drunk drivers cause 28 deaths per day, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, despite efforts by authorities and public education to curtail this dangerous practice. When someone has suffered injuries caused by a drunk driver, they have the right to claim compensation to pay for their losses.
Injuries Commonly Suffered in an Accident Caused by a Drunk Driver
Although any type of injury can be suffered in an intersection accident caused by a drunk driver, it depends on the type of crash and the speeds of the vehicles. Following are some of the more common types of trauma suffered in an intersection accident.
Traumatic Brain and Head Injuries in an Intersection Crash
In any type of accident, head injuries are common. Collisions caused by drunk drivers are often accidents that would never have happened if the driver had been sober. When a traumatic brain injury or other head trauma occurs, the injured party is usually hospitalized for a very long time and may have permanent disabilities as a result. In many cases, even patients who recover slowly can face cognitive problems that may prevent them from working.
The Injured Party May Suffer Multiple Bone Fractures
In some cases, broken bones that result from a drunk driver’s crash heal well in a few months, but that is not always the case. Occasionally, multiple serious fractures and crush injuries can occur in collisions, resulting in the amputation of digits or limbs that cannot be saved.
Trauma to the Spinal Column
Bruising to the spine or spinal cord, as well as slipped or herniated discs, is possible in intersection collisions caused by drunk drivers. Paralysis or permanent disability may result in more severe injuries. Paralysis is caused by a break in the spinal column and can affect the whole body or just the legs. The extent of the paralysis depends on where the break occurs in the spinal column. Many people with these types of injuries become permanently disabled.
