Highway 99 Head-on Collision Causes a Fatality
A single-vehicle accident fatality occurred on January 16 in the area of Yuba-Sutter, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). In a news release by the CHP, the accident occurred along Highway 99 northbound near Nicholas Avenue. Fog in the area reportedly limited motorists’ vision to around 75 feet.
How the Accident Fatality Happened
According to the report by the CHP, a man, age 24, was in a Honda Accord in the left lane of the highway when a Dodge pickup, driven by a man from San Jacinto, age 60, struck the vehicle head-on. The news release went on to say the man from San Jacinto was traveling in his vehicle at about 55 mph when the accident occurred. It was reported that neither driver had time to take evasive action before the collision occurred.
CHP Investigators Looking Into Cause of Accident Fatality
The 24-year-old man died in the collision, and the older man reportedly sustained major injuries. The man from San Jacinto was not wearing seat restraints at the time of the collision. Highway 99 was shut down in both directions for around four hours while an investigation into the accident was conducted. No arrest was made; however, authorities have not yet ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the fatal accident.
Weather Conditions Can Contribute to an Accident Fatality
Adverse weather conditions can increase the risk of an accident fatality or serious injuries. Many but not all drivers take extra precautions to avoid the dangers of an accident. Fog is especially treacherous because it limits the driver’s ability to see ahead clearly, especially if an accident is about to occur. Even those who stay within the speed limit and try to be careful can end up being injured or killed by a driver who isn’t so cautious.

Types of Negligence That Can Lead to an Accident Fatality
The following are the most common types of negligence that can lead to an accident fatality or serious injury:
- Drunk driving is a common cause of all types of traffic accidents. The drunk driver has lessened reflexes, vision is affected and their judgment is poor.
- Distracted driving is the number one cause of a collision, including an accident fatality. Texting is the common culprit in distracted driving.
- Speeding often leads to a traffic accident fatality. This occurs either when the driver can’t slow down in time to avoid a collision or loses control of their vehicle.
- Reckless driving can include racing, tailgating, failure to yield and more.
- Fatigued driving is comparable to being intoxicated in the way that it affects the motorist. One of the problems is that people who are too tired to be behind the wheel of a car often don’t realize it.
