Traumatic Brain Injury Deaths
Traumatic Brain Injury Deaths
I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton auto accident attorney. Death from traumatic brain injury (TBIs) can happen in an instant, changing life for the victim and his or her loved ones forever. In many cases, the victim dies. But even if he or she survives, the symptoms from the resulting injury can range from mild to severe; disabilities can include physical, emotional, personality, mental and other changes. Some of these disabilities can include paralysis, permanent brain damage and other complications, rendering the victim unable to work or care for his or her needs. Even in less serious cases, adjusting to life with a TBI takes time both for the victim and the family members. If the TBI occurred due to someone else’s negligence or intentional actions, a qualified brain injury lawyer might be able to pursue financial compensation on the victim’s behalf.
What Causes Traumatic Brain Injuries?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, TBIs occur for a number of reasons, including:
- Vehicle accidents
- Falls
- Struck by or against, including sports-related concussions
- Assault
- Self-inflicted injuries and
- Other causes.
TBI-Related Deaths According to Age for 2006 to 2010
The CDC also indicates that the main cause of death from TBIs varies with age, according to their most recent data. For example, children between the ages of 0 and 4 die most frequently from assault-related TBIs. However, for children, teens and young adults ranging in age from 5 to 24, traffic accidents are the most common reason for a death from a TBI. Self-inflicted TBIs are the most frequent cause of death for individuals between the age of 25 and 44 although traffic accidents are a close second. Self-inflicted TBIs are also the most common cause of death for those ranging in age from 45 to 64. For individuals who are 65 or older, falls cause the most TBI-related deaths.
