Vallejo Freeway Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident lawyer. On Thursday, January 26, 2017, a freeway collision in Vallejo caused major damages to multiple vehicles in addition to backing up traffic along the city’s largest roadway. The collision occurred at around 6:58 p.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 80, only a short distance west of the overpass at American Canyon Road at the northeastern edge of the city.

Collision Details

Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision had initially been identified as a collision between a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan and a white Ford Explorer. CHP also indicated that when they arrived at the scene of the accident, they found, in addition to the damaged sedan and SUV, four other vehicles in the area. It was unclear whether or not these vehicles had been a part of the accident.

No Serious Injuries

Early reports indicated no serious injuries were sustained. An ambulance was called to the crash site as a precautionary measure.

Damages and Traffic

Investigating authorities later found that both the SUV and sedan had received major damages and flat tires as a result of the collision. Whether or not the vehicles were completely totaled is as of yet unknown, although towing services were required to clear the area. The incident and subsequent cleanup of the roadway caused traffic blockages on the second, third, and fourth lanes of the highway.

Dangers of Distracted Driving

Accidents like this can often occur due to a driver not paying adequate attention to the road. Distracted driving is when a driver is involved in some activity that diverts their attention from the primary task of driving their vehicle safely and is a subcategory of what is referred to as reckless driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stated that 10 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes who are between 15 and 19 years of age are distracted at the time of their collisions.

New Bill Passed Regarding Mobile Phone Use While Driving

California Assembly Bill 1785, was passed and went into effect on the first of January. It outlaws the use of mobile phones while operating a vehicle in hopes of reducing instances of distracted driving. However, distracted driving does not necessarily involve the use of mobile devices. Activities such as grooming, reading, eating, drinking, applying makeup, and even communicating with passengers of the car can all be considered forms of distracted driving if they cause a driver to stop paying attention to the road.
